Q&A: Maddi Grier on IAM, Indigenous Rights and Canada Day

Throughout Canada, the voices of Indigenous people are profoundly absent from mainstream media. With millions of dollars spent on celebrating Canada’s 150h birthday, it’s no secret that the government wants to hide Canada’s dark history of cultural genocide of entire Indigenous communities. Maddi Grier, a SFU student and advocate for Indigenous rights, is determined to bring attention to their personal stories and lives...

'Ding Dong', Who's There? We Are!

Surrey Women’s Centre is hitting the ground running by knocking on doors this year! We’ll be letting you know how you can transform the lives of women and girls when you sign up for monthly giving. When a woman is admitted to the hospital after an assault, she has not only experienced emotional and physical trauma, but she now has many critical decisions to make in a short amount of time.

Nana's Legacy

When Maria Catroppa’s life was taken at the hands of her second husband in 2009, her family was devastated by the tragedy. Throughout most of her life, “Nana” has fought many obstacles and challenges as an immigrant and single mother of four children living in Vancouver. Against all odds, she has always displayed love, strength, and resilience to all those that have known her.

Voice of Resilience

As a survivor of a traumatic assault abroad, Kathleen’s experience can resonate with many travellers. While seeking support from Surrey Women’s Centre, other forms of trauma were unearthed that she'd suppressed throughout her life. But her inner resilient spirit gave her the strength she needed to face the hard truths of her past.

Faith and Love

Growing up as a woman in the seventies was difficult, as resources for women were scarce and victim-blaming was widely used to rationalize and justify men’s acts of violence against women. For Patricia, it was initially challenging to seek support for the abuse she had faced as a young girl.

Resilience iAM Movement

Jamais Cascio once said that: “Resilience is all about being able to overcome the unexpected. The goal of resilience is to thrive.”

Elishia’s story of courage and resilience fuels her artistic movement designed to shed light on taboo topics and issues. This year, she is focused on the launch of her RESILIENCE iAM Gala. The theme of this black tie event will be the promotion of human equality and the campaign to end violence against women.

#AskAnna

During the aftermath of her assault, Anna was overwhelmed with feelings of confusion and uncertainty as she embarked on the road to recovery. Despite how difficult it can be, a major aspect of her healing process began when she confided in someone she trusted about her assault. Anna’s act of resistance in overcoming her traumatic experiences involved reflecting and sharing her story against sexual violence.
